Cover Reveal – BECOMING THE DEMON

Becoming the Demon has been four years in the making–and now, finally, here is the cover!

About the Book

Some doors lead to places no man should go.

Desperate to rescue Dek after abandoning him in the fifth circle of hell, Alloran’s task is complicated when he is forced to go on the run again. Bereft of all resources, Alloran enters into the shady world of loose morals and stitchers—black wizards hiring out their services to the highest bidder. When a strange woman presents him with a lucrative but criminal opportunity, he must ask what Dek’s life is worth to him—or is it the chance of a challenge he cannot defeat that tempts him into darkness?

Gisayne is fixated on avenging her father’s murder, but Alloran, consumed by his need to rescue Dek, will not help her. Alone, she hunts the deadly wizard Ladanyon, but when the trail leads her back to Alloran, she must fight to save him—but from the black wizard or himself?

Blinded by his determination, Alloran risks crossing a line to become the very thing he fights against.

Becoming the Demon isn’t quite finished, but given I’ve been working on it on and off for the last four years, it is pretty close. As soon as To Make the Dead Weep goes to my editor, I’ll be putting the finishing touches on Becoming the Demon for a November?December release. Watch out for pre-order links later in the month!

To Make the Dead Weep – Cover Reveal

Here it is, the cover for To Make the Dead Weep, the third book in The Sundered Oath series. I am sorry – I know it’s been 16 months since book 2 was released. To Make the Dead Weep is due to go for edits in October, so you can expect to see it available within a few months after that!

About the Book:

After a lifetime of self-sacrifice, will an embittered priestess surrender the one thing she has left to give?

When Ellaeva runs afoul of the Rahmyrrim High Priestess and is imprisoned, the only man who can free her is the one she vowed never to see again—Lyram Aharris. But Ellaeva’s faith in her goddess is broken, and when Lyram refuses to abandon her to fate, she struggles to come to terms with what she has lost. Haunted by his broken oaths, and consumed by his quest to restore his honour, Lyram cannot help her find peace.

Together they journey into the desert to solve the riddle of their connection to each other, but their search leads to a killing field. Amidst the murdered souls, they balance on the cusp of understanding—what is the mysterious link between the Aharrises, the goddess Ahura, and the dragons?

But before they can complete the puzzle, the High Priestess attempts to bring an evil god into the world, and Ellaeva and Lyram are betrayed by those closest to them. If the Rahmyrrim cannot be halted, they will lose the most precious thing they have.

Ellaeva has always known her path ends at the ultimate sacrifice—but can she bring herself to fulfil her duty?

Becoming the Demon

If you read my Seven Circles of Hell Series, you may have been waiting as much as 4 years for book 3. I have been working on it all that time, it’s just been slow going around my commitments to The Sundered Oath. Fear not, it’s nearly done, and once To Make the Dead Weep goes to my editor, I will be putting the finishing touches on Becoming the Demon.

Cover Reveal: Makeover for CONFRONTING THE DEMON

For some time now I haven’t been especially happy with the cover art for Confronting the Demon, my debut novella. If there was something letting the book down, it was the cover. Not that the art is bad, per se–just not right.

People would mistake the book for a romance, when it’s high fantasy, or a fantasy mystery. And then, of course, there were the people asking me if the protagonist was based on Matt Bomer. He wasn’t–not on my instructions, anyway–but when it was brought to my attention, I realised there was a striking similarity! I’ve not officially changed the cover on Amazon or elsewhere on this site, so you can still go check it out if you want.

But now, here, we have new cover art, brought to you by Worlds Beyond Art (who also did Stalking the Demon and who will do the upcoming Becoming the Demon).

About CONFRONTING THE DEMON

For Alloran, who practised the fine art of frivolity for decades, life just got serious.

Framed for the heinous crime of demon summoning, he is forced to flee his comfortable life of silk sheets and nightly carousing in the wizard’s citadel for the stinking back-alleys of the city of Ehsan. There he poses as a common labourer to hide from his lover, his best friend and the wizarding authorities.

But beneath the garbage of the backstreets he discovers a new horror: a trail of gruesome bodies, gnawed on by hellcats, and left gift-wrapped for him to find with taunting ‘love notes’ attached. Someone is brutally murdering people from Alloran’s past and threatening all those close to him.

As the body count rises, Alloran must confront his personal demons and risk losing himself to a powerful addiction in order to expose the true villain. Failure means the destruction of the city at the hands of the deadliest demon to inhabit any of the seven hells – or worse, Alloran himself.

About On the Edge of Death

All the Left Hand of Death wants is something to call her own, but is the price too high?

Ellaeva, the fated avatar of the death goddess, is desperate to track down her missing family but the trail is decades old. Instead, she discovers her battered and bloodied sister priestesses driven across the Jerreki border on pain of death. Ellaeva must turn aside from her personal quest to investigate the murders, only to find her parents have been taken into the heart of the conflict.

Lyram Aharris, favoured son of the royal line of Ahlleyn, is the only living person she trusts to help her infiltrate the enemy stronghold and uproot the horror they find there, but their chequered past threatens the mission. Accompanying him is his crown prince, the one man Lyram wants dead above all others.

Now Ellaeva must face down the darkness in her soul before a dark god is brought into the world.

At the boundary of life and death, all oaths will be tested.

If you haven’t yet read Book 1, In the Company of the Dead, what are you waiting for?

Here’s what some people are saying:

“Some of the most notable fantasy authors create powerful reads with slower beginnings that lead up to a crescendo of gripping action – such as this story… Much like the acclaimed fantasy writer Patrick Rothfuss’s productions, In the Company of the Dead evolves slowly for the first few chapters… perfect for the fantasy fan seeking depth, who appreciates a slow build-up before the fiery action begins. Such an audience will find this perfectly fits the definition of an epic saga: sweeping, complex, and ultimately engrossing.” ~ D.Donovan, Senior Reviewer, Midwest Book Review

“In the grand old tradition of High Fantasy, this dark and doleful tale cannot fail to please lovers of Tolkien, Jordan and Mallory. It harks back to the Good Old Days of fantasy, when heroes were heroes and were concerned more with honour and the eternal than with sex and witty one-liners. Caught in a tragic juxtaposition, a hero and heroine tread out their doom, although at the end of the book, a slight ray of hope pierces the gloom. I could hardly put it down.” ~ Tabitha Ormiston-Smith

“If you’re a fan of epic fantasy with a romantic twist along the lines of Game of Thrones and The Lord of the Rings, I think you’ll enjoy this book quite a lot. Loaded with characters, action, magic, deception, murder, and (my personal favorite fantasy component) an evil Necromancer, this book is quite the thick read, filled with characters that make the book seem real…I definitely see this as a book that the more you read it, the more you’ll glean from it. Ballintyne does a great job at creating quite the epic world and I know things are going to get deeper and more action-packed once this series is complete. If you’re looking for a hefty, deep, complex fantasy novel, definitely check this book out.” ~ Nebula of Books

About the Book

Only a fool crosses a god, but Ellaeva and Lyram will do anything to get what they want.

Chosen as a five-year-old orphan to be the Left Hand of Death, Ellaeva has nothing to call her own—nothing except a desire to avenge her murdered parents. Her duties leave her no time to pursue the man responsible, until both her work and revenge lead to the same place—the lonely castle where Lyram Aharris is serving out his exile for striking his prince.

Lyram is third in line for the throne, and when the castle is unexpectedly besieged, he fears his prince means to remove him from contention for the crown permanently. Ellaeva’s arrival brings hope, until she reveals she has not come for the siege, but instead she hunts the castle for a hidden necromancer dedicated to the dark god of decay.

Within their stone prison, Ellaeva and Lyram must fight to save themselves from political machinations and clashing gods. But as the siege lengthens, the greatest threat comes from an unexpected quarter.

About the Author

Ciara Ballintyne grew up on a steady diet of adult epic fantasy from the age of nine, leaving her with a rather confused outlook on life – she believes the good guys should always win, but knows they often don’t. She is an oxymoron; an idealistic cynic.

She began her first attempts at the craft of writing in 1992, culminating in the publication of her debut work, Confronting the Demon, in 2013. Her first book to be published with Evolved Publishing is In the Company of the Dead.

She holds degrees in law and accounting, and is a practising financial services lawyer. In her spare time, she speculates about taking over the world – how hard can it really be? If she could be anything, she’d choose a dragon, but if she is honest she shares more in common with Dr. Gregory House of House M.D. – both the good and the bad. She is a browncoat, a saltgunner, a Whedonite, a Sherlockian, a Ringer and a Whovian… OK, most major geek fandoms. Her alignment is chaotic good. She is an INTJ.

Ciara lives in Sydney, Australia, with her husband, her two daughters, and a growing menagerie of animals that unfortunately includes no dragons.
